Joyce Hope Lowe

October 7, 1934 to October 5, 2023 – Joyce Hope Lowe of Gresham, Oregon died peacefully on October 5, 2023, from heart failure at the age of 88. She was born October 7, 1934, in Providence, Rhode Island to John and Winifred Tuhey and was the eldest of two siblings, John (Buddy) Tuhey and Eleanor Hoehn, who both preceded her in death.

On October 3, 1953, she married the love of her life, Arthur Lowe who passed in 2010. They welcomed four children into their lives and traveled as a family to various military posts including Fort Gordon, GA; Fort Meyer, VA; Wildflecken, Germany; Fort Ord, CA; and Fullerton, CA. While in Fullerton, Joyce worked as an elementary school media specialist. She loved working with children and helping them explore a love of reading.

The opportunities afforded them while traveling as a military family fostered lasting friendships. Several years after retiring from the military they settled in Athens, Texas and became members of their little country church where Joyce taught Bible Study classes, led exercise classes and together with her husband rekindled their love of square dancing. In 1982, they were called by World Concern, a Christian global relief and development organization, to serve as missionaries in Mogadishu, Somalia, Africa. After completing one year of service in Africa, they worked at the California Center for International Students in Culver City, CA sharing God’s love and becoming the mom and dad to students from all over the world attending UCLA and USC. Joyce loved people from all walks of life and shared her love for Jesus everywhere she lived.

Joyce is survived by her four children: Arthur William Lowe (Cheryl M. Lowe) of Ridgefield, WA; James Steven Lowe (Mary Lowe) of Fairdale, KY; Susanjoy Lowe Wright (Daniel Wright) of Estacada, OR; and David John Lowe (Nancy Lowe) of Eagle Creek, OR. Ten Grandchildren: April Grace Lowe (Craig Jessen); Valerie Joyce Lowe (Rusty Lindgren); Matthew Lowe, Sam Lowe, Bo Baskoro, Chandra Joy Teague (Brian Teague) Christopher Sutherland (Carolyn Sutherland), Dustin Lowe (Amanda Lowe) Rachel Bowen (Parker Bowen) and Whitney Lowe. Three Great Grandchildren: Story May Lowe, Arthur Justas Teague and Austyn Joy Teague. She also leaves behind a Sister-in-Law Laurie Tuhey and Brother-in-Law Daniel Lowe (Mary Lou Lowe) and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 2pm at MountainView Christian Church, 1890 NE Cleveland Ave., Gresham, OR 97030.
