Portland police at the Southeast Flavel Street MAX platform investigating the Saturday, Sept. 2 stabbing.

The man accused of stabbing two teenagers on a MAX train in September 2023 has been sentenced to 18 years in prison, the Multnomah County district attorney announced Monday, March 18.

Adrian Cummins, 26, pleaded guilty to charges of assault, attempted murder, attempted robbery, and bias crime after the incident in the Lents neighborhood left one teen injured on the evening of Sept. 2, 2023.

A witness to the attack, Siara, previously told KOIN 6 News there was a “big, loud commotion” in the back of the MAX. “We look over and we see this guy, like, starting to go crazy. And I see him start to lunge for the guy who got stabbed.”

Siara said she saw the victim’s friend throw himself in front of the man with the knife, but the train stopped and most riders got off moments later — including the attacker and the victims.
