Three Multnomah County residents die from suspected heat deaths

- People sought relief from the heat in August 2023 throughout Multnomah County. In 2024, as of Friday, July 5, a state of emergency has been declared for high temperatures in Oregon.
The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office reported its investigation of three suspected heat deaths since the state of emergency was declared Friday, July 5.

On Monday, July 8, the examiner’s office released information of the three deaths.
The first being a man found in the 97230 ZIP code reported on Friday, July 5; the second being a man found in the 97205 ZIP code reported on Sunday, July 7; and the third being a man found in the 97216 ZIP code on reported on Sunday, July 7.
Another man was transported from outside Multnomah County on Saturday, July 6, where he died from a suspected heat-related illness at a hospital in Portland. The man was not a resident of Multnomah County.

All deaths are considered suspected cases and are under investigation as possible hot-weather related deaths. Confirmation will not be complete for several weeks to months.
According to a press release, further tests and investigation will determine whether the deaths are officially hot-weather related. In some instances, deaths may be found to have had other causes.
