Atmospheric river to bring heavy rain to Portland metro area

An “atmospheric river” of rain is barreling toward the Portland metro area and should drop as much as an inch and a half of rain on the region.

The rains of November are here.

A strong storm system fueled by a moderate atmospheric river is on a direct path to bring soaking rain to Oregon and Southwest Washington this week.

KOIN 6 Meteorologist Josh Cozart predicts that the storm will reach the Portland area Tuesday night, Nov. 12, and will drop up to 1.5 inches of rain on Portland and its suburbs. The heaviest rainfall is forecast to hit the Portland area on Wednesday and is expected to diminish by the end of the week.

Although atmospheric rivers typically bring warmer weather from the subtropics, the storm will meet with a trough of cold air, causing temperatures to remain in the mid 50s and upper 40s. The cool temperatures will allow for significant snowfall in the Cascades.
