Give back this holiday season: Donate blood and save lives

As the holiday season wraps up, the American Red Cross is asking local residents to give the gift of life by donating blood or platelets. With just two weeks left in the year, donors have a chance to help those in need enjoy the holidays with loved ones while also receiving a special thank-you for their generosity.

Through Jan. 3, those who come to donate will receive an exclusive Red Cross long-sleeved T-shirt, while supplies last. The Red Cross hopes this small gesture will encourage both regular and first-time donors to take an hour of their time to make a lifesaving impact.
Donors with type O negative blood and those giving platelets are especially needed. Type O negative is often called the “universal blood type” because it can be safely transfused to patients of any blood type, making it critical during emergencies. Meanwhile, platelets play a vital role in helping cancer patients, trauma victims, and others who rely on specialized care.
Winter poses unique challenges to maintaining a stable blood supply. Seasonal illnesses, busy travel schedules, and unpredictable weather often result in fewer donation appointments. By making and keeping appointments now, donors can help ensure hospitals have enough blood to meet patient needs through the new year.

To further show appreciation, the Red Cross is offering a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. Those who donate blood, platelets, or plasma from Jan. 1-26 during National Blood Donor Month will be automatically entered for the drawing. More details can be found at RedCrossBlood.org/SuperBowl.
The donation process is quick and simple, and all blood types are needed. Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh 110 pounds or more, and be in generally good health. High school students and donors under 19 must meet additional height and weight requirements.
Appointments can be scheduled by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or using the Red Cross Blood Donor App. For added convenience, donors can save time by completing a health history questionnaire online the day of their appointment.
For those who want to do even more, the Red Cross is seeking volunteer blood donor ambassadors to greet and assist donors at drives, as well as transportation specialists to deliver blood products to hospitals. Visit redcross.org/volunteertoday to learn more.
This holiday season, take an hour to give back—because your donation could mean everything to someone in need.
