December 11, 1933 – November 15, 2024 – David McMaster Whiteford passed away on November 15, 2024 just shy of his 91st birthday. David was born on December 11, 1933 in New York, NY to Errington Whiteford and Elizabeth McMaster. David spent the first part of his life in New England. He attended Dartmouth where he was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. He was the captain of the lacrosse team, and also played football and ice hockey. David then joined the army and was stationed in Greenland in the radio communications department during the Korean war. He met the love of his life Molly in Greenwich, CT, where they married in 1957, and had three children, Ben, Lisa, and Tom. In 1970 David and Molly moved the family to Lake Oswego, Oregon, continuing his career as a dye and chemical salesman covering the western US and Canada.
David loved the outdoors and spent many happy times at the family cabin in Government Camp skiing and hiking. Rafting the rivers of the Pacific Northwest was also a passion. After many years of entering a lottery, David and his river friends finally drew the rare permit for the Colorado river, which was a dream come true for him. David spent much of his summers sailing on Lake Oswego and he belonged to the Lake Oswego Sailing Club. The Club would hold numerous races during the spring, summer, and early fall months. David and Molly enjoyed extended sailing trips in the San Juan Islands, Desolation Sound, and the British Virgin Islands. They loved their August stays at Priest Lake, Idaho with the family often joining them for sailing, swimming, water skiing, huckleberry picking, and summer time relaxation.
David and Molly had 60 wonderful years together before Molly passed away in 2017. They were fortunate to have travelled the world together, often joined by friends. They were great hosts and spent many summer evenings on their deck overlooking the lake enjoying cocktails and dinner with family and friends. He was a fantastic father and true friend who always had the time for you. His gregarious personality and love of music and dance will be fondly remembered.
David spent his last couple of years at the River Terrace care facility where he was treated with dignity and kindness, followed by exceptional care by Vista River Hospice.
David is survived by a sister Sue Simbal (Horst); his three children Ben (Tina) Whiteford, Lisa (Tom) Lombard, and Tom (Lori) Whiteford; five grandchildren Brandon Ferschweiler, Eugene Strobeck, Curtiss Strobeck, Julia Whiteford, and Amanda Whiteford; and three great-grandchildren Hayden, Harper, and Sven.
A celebration of life is scheduled for April 12, 2025 at 1:00 at Nicoletta’s Table in Lake Oswego.
