An ODOT Incident Response crew prepares to assist a motorist in need of help in this undated file photo. Little detail is known so far about a Thursday, Feb. 11, crash that has closed westbound I-84 near Willamette Falls.

A Thursday morning, Feb. 13, crash caused a full closure of westbound Interstate 84 from Hood River (milepost 64) to four miles west of Multnomah Falls (milepost 27), according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Winter weather conditions caused a white-out scenario that ultimately involved an estimated 20 to 30 vehicles spread across multiple crash scenes blocking the westbound lanes.

KOIN 6 News reported that cars, trucks and semi-trucks were involved in the crash.

“This series of crashes was caused by a combination of high winds, blowing snow and drivers traveling too fast for the winter weather conditions in the area,” according to an ODOT press release. “At the time of release there is no ETA on reopening. Crews are working to clear the area.”

A Multnomah County official told KOIN 6 that an SUV caught fire in the pileup, though everyone was able to get out.

“Responders are going car by car,” deputies said. “There are reports of injuries; no number at this time. Whiteout conditions.

I-84 westbound remains closed as of early afternoon.

The Oregon Department of Transportation says the crash, at Milepost 35, could result in a “a lengthy closure,” due to today’s snow, wind and fear of freezing rain. Motorists should plan for delays or use alternate routes, and should watch out for emergency responders.

Earlier reports indicated as many as 100 vehicles were involved.
