July 25, 1925 – December 28, 2024 – Paul Dix, a longtime resident of Lake Oswego, OR and local Dentist passed away on December 28, 2024 at the age of 99 years and 5 months.

Paul was born in Minneapolis, the son of Paul and Ester Dix. He was raised in Edina, MN during the Roaring Twenties followed by The Great Depression. He graduated from Southwest HS in 1943. His classmates included future Movie Actors Arlene Dahl, Peter Graves and James Arness. He even met Babe Ruth in his father’s drugstore!

After graduation from High School, World War II was raging and he soon was in the Battle of the Bulge – the Ardennes region of Belgium. He was in the Field Artillery division and a battlefield Medic as a surgical technician. Once the war ended, Paul was stationed in Germany as part of the American Occupation. This allowed him to go skiing in the Swiss Alps!

He returned home and graduated from the University of Minnesota – School of Dentistry in 1951. Tired of cold winters in Minnesota he moved to Medford, Oregon where Paul established his dental practice and started a family. He later opened an office in Portland before moving his practice to Lake Oswego to be closer to home. He was a Dentist until the age of 85 when he retired in 2011. To celebrate, he went on a zip-line down a canyon in Whistler!

Dr. Dix had many interests. He was proficient in wood carving, abstract acrylic paintings, mosaics, pen and ink drawings and collage. He belonged to Lake Area Artists in Lake Oswego. Paul also enjoyed canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, camping, biking, cross-country skiing, tennis and golf over the years. He loved to sail in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. Paul and his son also constructed their own Kayaks to enjoy on local waters.

Paul was an avid reader of science-based books and magazines. He loved watching movies at the Cinema and had season tickets to the Oregon Symphony. Paul enjoyed music, whether listening to his favorite artists or playing the piano, organ and clarinet. He also sang in church choirs and often was a soloist.

In 2014 he and his wife Dorothy moved to be closer to their son Paul in Issaquah, WA. Paul took care of his Dad for the last 10 years of his life. He left behind his son Paul and two daughters from a previous marriage, Kathleen Kautz and Nancy Gundekunst. He was pre-deceased in death by his wife Dorothy, a victim of COVID in 2020.

While there were health challenges in his later years, he was never a burden. It was an honor to take care of my father, a World War II veteran and my best friend. God Bless and may you rest in peace.
