The Portland Winterhawks controlled play, then lost control, and then Everett dominated in overtime, but the home team come out victorious.
Josh Zakreski scored off a loose puck with 4:11 left in overtime as the Winterhawks beat Everett 6-5 Wednesday in Game 4 of their Western Hockey League playoff series at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Hawks have tied the series 2-2 — after losing the first two games in overtime — against the team with the WHL’s best regular-season record.
Game 5 is 7 p.m. Friday at Everett.
Portland led 5-3 but Everett’s Kaden Hammell scored twice in the final five minutes of regulation to tie it.
The Silvertips dominated play in overtime. They held Portland without a shot for the period’s first 13 minutes. The winning sequence: Diego Buttazzoni flipped the puck into the offensive zone, an Everett defenseman misplayed it and Zakreski gathered the loose puck and scored on a backhand past goalie Raiden LeGall.
Everett outshot Portland 10-3 in the extra period.
Up until five minutes left in regulation, Kyle Chyzowski (hat trick), goalie Ondrej Stebetak and the Hawks played a great game.
Chyzowski’s first two goals came in the first 10 minutes of the game, and then fellow veteran Buttazzoni made it 3-1.
Everett kept poking away throughout the game, but Portland continually responded. The Silvertips drew within a goal on Landon DuPont’s goal, but Chyzowski scored his third goal near the end of the second period to make it 4-2.
Cole Temple scored for Everett early in the third period, followed three minutes later by the first playoff goal by Portland’s Kayd Ruedig, which made it 5-3.
That’s when it got tight. Hammell scored with 4:13 left, and after Alex Weiermair got whistled for a double-minor penalty for butt-ending, Hammell scored again with 1:01 left to tie the game at 5-5.
Stebetak helped keep the score tied in overtime until Zakreski’s game-winning goal.
Everett outshot Portland 48-31.
