No. 6 Oregon State baseball beats Cal State Northridge in series-opener

One week ago, No. 6 Oregon State baseball’s Nelson Keljo and Eric Segura got to see their wish to come true after the pair combined to pitch all nine innings en route to a win over Cal State Fullerton.

Now, that dream may be the expectation for the pair of pitchers, who once again combined for a complete game as Oregon State picked up a 13-8 series-opening win over Cal State Northridge on Thursday, April 17.

Keljo, the Beavers usual Friday starter, saw his start bumped up a day as Oregon State and Northridge opted to play their three-game set Thursday through Saturday ahead of Easter Sunday.

The junior southpaw didn’t have his best stuff against the Madators, lasting just 4.2 innings while allowing six earned runs on six hits, three walks, one hit batter and five strikeouts. Keljo was relieved by Segura after recording two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Segura himself didn’t look particularly sharp to begin his stint, either. The right-hander plunked the first batter he faced, allowed a run to score on a wild pitch the next at-bat and letting up a two-RBI single before recording the final out of the inning.

However, the sixth inning and onward were dominate ones by Segura. The sophomore produced a three-straight three-up, three down innings while striking out the side in both the sixth and eighth innings.

One more unearned run would come across home plate in the ninth inning after Segura hit Northridge’s Roberto Gonzalez, who advanced to third on a single from teammate Andrew Guana before scoring on a passed ball by Oregon State catcher Wilson Weber.

Segura (6-1) earned the win for the effort, finishing his 4.1-inning stint with eight strikeouts, two hits allowed and two runs. Over his last five outings, Segura has pitched four or more innings four times, recording at least six strikeouts in each such appearance.

The Beavers took advantage of Northridge’s less-than-stellar pitching with a 16-hit, 10-walk performance at the dish.

Gavin Turley bashed a pair of home runs, bringing his season-total to 11 and career-total to 44, just two away from breaking Travis Bazzana’s program-record 45-career bombs. Turley finished the game 3-for-5, adding a double and a team-high four RBI.

Shortstop Aiva Arquette accounted for Oregon State’s third homer of the day, maintaining his place atop the Beavers’ leaderboard with 12 this season.

Weber had a career day at the dish, going 5-for-6 with a pair of doubles, three singles and one RBI. The Beavers backstop was joined in the multi-hit club by Turley and second baseman AJ Singer (4-for-6, 2 2B, 2 RBI). Arquette and leadoff man Easton Talt each finished with just one hit, but combined for five of the Beavers 10 walks in the win.

Outfielder Dallas Macias (0-for-4, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K) and third baseman Trent Caraway (0-for-4, 2 BB, 3 Ks) were both in Oregon State’s starting lineup, but both saw their hitting slumps continue despite each reaching base.

The Beavers and Matadors series rolls on, with first pitch of game two scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 18. Freshman right-hander Dax Whitney (3-2, 2.88 ERA) will start for the Beavers, while Northridge has yet to name a starter.

The game will not be televised on any platforms, but links to the radio broadcast can be found on Oregon State’s online schedule.
