There’ll be a Game 7 in the Portland-Everett Western Hockey League playoff series.
Playing on home ice, the Winterhawks had an opportunity to close out the Silvertips, who had the WHL’s best regular-season record. But, the Silvertips started a new goalie, Jesse Sanche, and quickly grabbed momentum with three first-period goals and went on to rout Portland 8-4 Saturday in Game 6 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The series is tied 3-3. Game 7 will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Everett. The Winterhawks have experience with Game 7 on the road, having won at Prince George in the previous round.
Eight different players scored for Everett, who had four second-period goals. After the fifth goal, by Tyler McKenzie just 1:31 into the second period, the Hawks replaced Ondrej Stebetak in goal with Marek Schlenker. It was 5-1.
Kyle McDonough, Alex Weiermair, Diego Buttazzoni and Kyle Chyzowski scored for Portland.
Weiermair and Buttazzoni scored quick goals in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 5-3, but the Silvertips responded with two more goals in the period by Austin Roest and Tarin Smith.
Roest added three assists.
Sanche had replaced Raiden LeGall in Everett’s goal, giving the visitors a spark.
Everett outshot Portland 38-27.
Attendance at VMC for Game 6 was 5,846.
Meanwhile, Spokane beat Victoria 5-4 in overtime to lead 3-2 in the other Western Conference series. Spokane trailed 4-1 entering the third period, but rallied to tie and then won it with a goal with two seconds left in overtime.
