The No. 16-ranked Oregon baseball team pulled out a 10-6 win over No. 10 UCLA, delivering the Ducks a series win at PK Park on Sunday, April 20.
It was the first series that Oregon beat a top-10 opponent in since taking two out of three games over Stanford — then-ranked No. 7 nationally — in April of the 2023 season.
Junior outfielder Mason Neville led the way for Oregon, putting together a 3-for-4, three-RBI day at the plate and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. All three of Neville’s RBI came off of one swing, bashing his 19th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Not only did the homer put Neville atop the nation’s leaderboard, but set Oregon’s single-season program record. Ducks first baseman Jacob Walsh was the previous record-holder, hitting 18 jacks a season ago.
“It feels good,” Neville said about setting the record, including that he did get the ball back. “I didn’t think about (the record) too much, after yesterday (I) just wanted to win. But it felt good, I kind of blacked out a little bit, but it was a big spot in the game and (I was) trying to do whatever I could to help my team win.”
The three-run blast gave Oregon a 6-4 lead over the Bruins heading into the top of the fifth and before both offenses went stagnant for the next three frames. UCLA added one run in each of the sixth and eighth innings, tying the game, before a four-run bottom of the eighth saw the Ducks pull away.
Oregon’s freshman catcher Burke-Lee Mabeus launched a solo tank on the first pitch he saw to lead off the bottom of the eighth.
“I was just thinking it was going to be a hustle double or something like that. I wasn’t so sure it went over,” Mabeus said of the swing. “I think I found out rounding second, and I was still sprinting.”
The swing proved to be the winning run of the game, but Oregon would hit through the order en route to three more crossing home before UCLA recorded three outs. First baseman Jacob Walsh drove in a pair with a single, while right fielder Drew Smith hit a sac fly to bring home the final run of the inning.
Ducks first baseman Jacob Walsh (2-for-3, 2 BB) and left fielder Anson Aroz (2-for-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI) joined Neville with multi-hit days. Eight of Oregon’s nine starters logged at least one hit, drawing a total of eight walks while striking out just three times.
Right-handed reliever Seth Mattox (2-0) earned the win with 1.2 innings of work, issuing just one walk and no hits. Jason Reitz (5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 Ks) made the start, but earned a no decision after UCLA tied it in the top of the eighth against left-hander Ian Umlandt (2.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K).
Oregon improves to 27-11 on the season, facing Portland (17-23) in its next action. First pitch against the Pilots is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22 at PK Park in Eugene.
