No. 3 Oregon State baseball dropped its series-opening matchup to No. 13 Oregon, 4-2, on Friday, April 25.
The loss marked the first by the Beavers since falling to UC Irvine on Friday, April 4. Oregon State’s 12-game winning streak — the longest active streak in the country — also comes to an end with the loss.
“It comes down to winning the series,” Oregon State head coach Mitch Canham said. “You have to do that in regionals. You have to do that in super regionals. You have to do that in Omaha as well… Rather than let this one turn (us) the wrong way, it’s about tomorrow’s game and evening the series and going about our work.”
The Beavers out-hit the Ducks in the low-scoring affair, notching five against Oregon’s four. The discrepancy came in the quality of contact, with Oregon centerfielder Mason Neville and first baseman Jacob Walsh each hitting home runs; while the Beavers’ mustered just a pair of extra-base hits — two doubles from third baseman Trent Caraway and centerfielder Canon Reeder.
Both of Oregon State’s runs in the game came in the top of the third inning, with back-to-back RBI-singles from shortstop Aiva Arquette and left fielder Gavin Turley.
Aside from the back-to-back RBI, Oregon starting pitcher Grayson Grinsell put together an impressive outing. Coming off a complete game just a week ago against No. 10 UCLA, the southpaw tossed 117 pitches in a seven-inning stint, allowing four hits, two walks and punching out five Beavers.
Chinks in Grinsell’s armor began to show late into his outing as his pitch-count climbed, according to Canham.
“As (Grinsell) started to climb in the zone a little bit, we popped a handful up and just didn’t drive (the ball) in those big opportunity moments,” Canham said. “You’ve got to make the most of those times (where) you have opportunities.”
Grinsell (7-1) finished his day freezing Reeder and first baseman Jacob Krieg with back-to-back looking strikeouts. Left-hander Ian Umlandt (0.2 innings, 1 K) and righty Cole Stokes (0.1 innings, 1 K) worked a quick eighth inning before right-hander Seth Mattox finished the game in the ninth, earning the save.
The Beavers employed just left-hander Nelson Keljo and righty Eric Segura on a Friday for the third-straight week. Keljo (2-2) worked into the fifth, recording the first two outs before plunking Oregon’s Walsh and handing the game off to Segura for the final three and two-thirds innings.
Freshman right-hander Dax Whitney (3-2, 4.10 ERA) will start game two of the series for Oregon State, with righty Collin Clarke (2-2, 4.37 ERA) on the hill for the Ducks.
First pitch of game two is slated for 4:05 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 at PK Park in Eugene.
