Three-straight losses became four for No. 7 Oregon State baseball, falling 8-4 to No. 6 Oregon under the lights of Goss Stadium on Tuesday, April 29.

Tuesday’s loss by the Beavers was, mostly, par for the course, relative to their prior three.

Oregon State logged as many combined-hits and walks as their in-state rival (15 each), struck out fewer times than the Ducks (six for Oregon State, seven for Oregon) and got a longer outing from its starting pitcher than Oregon did.

But the Ducks hit the ball harder. They launched two homers and four-total extra-base hits, while the Beavers finished with two. Oregon stole four bases (14 total in four games), while Oregon State finished with none on the weekend.

The Beavers looked visibly more frustrated following the loss, with Oregon State head coach Mitch Canham saying as much.

“Everyone is very angry in that clubhouse, as am I,” Canham said. “Everyone who left the stadium tonight is feeling the exact same way… Now it’s our job to rebound from it and go make the most out of this series in Hawaii. But those games are a couple days away. So we gotta make sure that tomorrow we show up with some aggression and real intent to our practice.”

Ground balls were also a killer for the Beavers, grounding into four double-plays on Tuesday and bringing their total to nine over the last four games. All four in the finale came with no outs.

“(Oregon’s pitching staff) did a good job keeping the ball down on us,” Canham said. “You’ve got to lay off those down and make sure you’re on time. If you (swing) late, the barrel’s not catching up to plane out with it. Definitely not something we’re looking to do and we’ve got to clean it up.”

Wyatt Queen made the start for the Beavers, pitching five innings and allowing a pair of earned runs, both of which were solo homers from Ducks first baseman Jacob Walsh and second baseman Ryan Cooney. The sophomore struck out five, issuing five walks as well.

Left-hander Tanner Douglas (1-1) took the loss, letting up three hits and recording a single out before being relieved. Right-handed sophomore Laif Palmer spun three innings of relief, allowing his first two earned-runs of the season. Joey Mundt allowed the eighth run of the game and was removed before recording an out, while Zach Kmatz finished off the last two batters on four pitches.

If there was a positive from the loss, it was a three-hit night from Beavers third baseman Trent Caraway. The highly-touted sophomore has been on a skid over the last six-or-so weeks, but reached safely in all four of his plate appearances, hitting three singles, recording an RBI and working a walk.

Gavin Turley also put together a two-hit night, accounting for both of Oregon State’s extra base hits with a double and a home run, his 15th of the season. Left fielder Dallas Macias also recorded a hit and drew a walk, scoring runs on both.

The Beavers will embark on their furthest roadtrip of the season for their next series, heading to Manoa, Hawai’i to face the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors. First pitch against Hawai’i is set for 9:35 p.m. on Friday, May 2.
