No. 10 Oregon baseball beats Saint Mary’s, takes series

The No. 10-ranked Oregon Ducks capped off a midweek series against Saint Mary’s with an 8-1 win on Wednesday, May 7.

Wednesday’s win by the Ducks — along with a 6-3 victory Tuesday — completed a two-game sweep of the Gaels. Oregon has now won four-straight, as well as eight of its last nine outings.

“We haven’t played midweek (games) consistently well throughout the year,” Head coach Mark Wasikowski said in his postgame interview. “For us to show now that we’re able to handle midweeks (was big)… (Saint Mary’s) has a good ball club, so I was happy to see us win two games.”

Long time, no see

The middle innings of Wednesday’s game were handled by some of the Ducks’ usual suspects out of the bullpen. Right-handers Ryan Featherston (3 and 1/3rd innings) and Jaxon Jordan accounted for the majority of the game. Featherston let up two doubles and Saint Mary’s lone run to the first two batters he faced, before settling in to retire the next 10 batters. Jordan’s stint took just 10 pitches, inducing a double play in the seventh and striking out the first batter of the eighth.

The two were bookended by appearances — great ones, at that — from a pair of arms who’ve spent most of the season on the shelf in Oregon’s bullpen.

Senior right-hander Julien Hernandez made his second start of the year, while freshman Tanner Bradley came through for the final five outs of the win. It was Hernandez’s first outing since facing one batter against Maryland in mid April, and Bradley’s first since pitching against Columbia in February.

“(Pitching coach Blake Hawksworth) has been saying (he) wants Hernandez to start because of what we’re seeing in the bullpen (and wants) Bradley in the game because of the work we’ve been doing,” Wasikowski said. “The developments are occurring at a pretty high level, and you’re seeing that… That (was) really good stuff coming out of their hand and it’s located really well.”

Hernandez (1-1) threw three scoreless innings out the gate, recording five strikeouts while allowing three hits and earned the win. Bradley punched out a pair, retiring all five batters he faced in order.

None of the four arms on the mound for the Ducks issued a free pass, marking the first time the Oregon pitching staff had done so in 2025.

Meggers leads way off bench

With the Gaels throwing a left-handed pitcher out the gate, Wasikowski rolled with the right-handed hitting freshman Coen Nicali at catcher to start. After the Gaels went to their bullpen for a right-hander in the third, junior Chase Meggers came off the bench to catch the remainder of the win.

Meggers, who led the Ducks in batting average in 2024 (.316), hasn’t looked like his sophomore self this year, hitting .211 in just 71 at-bats in 24 games. The Ducks backstop saw some return to form against the Gaels, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a walk.

“It felt good to, you know, be back,” Meggers said. “I try not to (make excuses), but I’ve had a couple finger issues and hand issues to start the season. I just haven’t felt like myself, (so) I’ve been watching videos from last year because I hit really well.”

Meggers went on to say he’s feeling fully healthy now, with a narrowed-up approach at the plate helping. The junior’s first hit of the day — and two errors by the Gaels that followed — got him credited for a pair of RBI in the bottom of the sixth, kicking off a six-run frame.

A bases-loaded walk from centerfielder Drew Smith was followed by two RBI-singles from shortstop Maddox Molony and outfielder Parker Stinson, capping off the Oregon rally.
