No students were injured in a shooting at a preschool in Southwest Portland on Thursday, May 8.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, an armed security guard at the preschool  shot an adult male in a parking lot in the 6600 block of Southwest Capital Highway. The scene is between the Fanno Creek Clinic and the Gan – Portland Jewish Preschool.

The names of the guard and wounded male were not immediately released. No one has been arrested.

Officers responded to a report of the shooting at 11:50 a.m. When they arrived, the officers found an adult male injured in the parking lot. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Police said the involved armed security officer, who is employed by the preschool, remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. No suspects are being sought and there is no known ongoing danger to the community.

The initial investigation suggests the shooting did not take place on the school grounds, police said. Parents and guardians are being notified and a plan is in place for them to pick up their youths.

As reported by The Oregonian, “Most Jewish organizations in Portland employ security guards, especially in the wake of the 2018 shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh that killed 11 people, said Marc Blattner, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland.

“Some of the guards are armed, and security measures at the institutions have increased following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel and a rise in antisemitic incidents in Oregon and elsewhere.”

The investigation temprarily closed Southwest Vermont Street between Southwest Capitol Highway and Southwest 24th Avenue for the investigation.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
