No. 5 Oregon takes Friday opener from Washington

No. 5 Oregon baseball (26-13, 17-8 Big Ten) collected its fifth-straight win Friday, May 9, beating Washington (27-23, 15-10) 5-0 to kick off the final regular-season home series of the season at PK Park.

The win by the Ducks was helmed by Friday night starter, Grayson Grinsell. With two games remaining at PK Park this season and the uncertainty that comes with seeding the NCAA tournament — as Grinsell’s status as a potential MLB draftee — its no sure bet that the junior southpaw will get another crack at toeing the rubber in front of Oregon’s home crowd. Ducks head coach Mark Wasikowski, however, has different plans over the final weeks of the 2025 season.

“We don’t want that to be (Grinsell’s) last outing at PK Park,” Wasikowski said. “I can get to the sentimental stuff (about him) later on, but we’re going to play to make sure (he) pitches at PK Park. Not just one more outing, but hopefully a couple more.”

If it was Grinsell’s final outing at the ballpark he’s called home for the last three seasons, it was one for books.

The left-hander spun seven scoreless innings, striking out eight Huskies while allowing just four hits and a single walk. Grinsell (8-2) earned the win and exited after retiring the final seven batters he faced, including an inning-ending strikeout against Washington second baseman Trevor Kole.

It was Grinsell’s 121st pitch of the evening, a career high.

“(Grinsell) wanted to finish the game,” Wasikowski said with a laugh. “We had to pry the ball out of his hand even after the seventh inning. (Pitching coach Blake Hawksworth and I) were like, ‘No, you’re done, man. Go sit down.'”

Right-handed relievers Cole Stokes and Seth Mattox finished off the game for Grinsell.

Stokes faced five batters in the eighth, striking out four after a called third-strike to Huskies first baseman Casen Taggart was dropped by battery mate Burke-Lee Mabeus, allowing the runner to reach safely. After hitting the next he face, Stokes responded for a fourth strikeout, ending the frame.

Mattox pitched a perfect ninth, throwing six pitches for a fly out, groundout and pop up.

Four of the Ducks’ five runs came in the bottom of the first, hitting through the order to begin the game. A leadoff walk by Mason Neville — his 50th of 2025, tying Oregon’s single-season record — set the tone, being driven in by Jacob Walsh on an RBI-single. Another RBI knock from left fielder Anson Aroz put another run on the board, while bases-loaded free-passes from Huskies’ starter Max Banks added a pair.

A solo home run from Jeffery Heard in the seventh marked Oregon’s final run of the game.

“No secret, it’s been a minute since I hit one,” Heard said. “So it felt nice, for sure.”

Game two between the Ducks and Huskies begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10 in Eugene.
