The No. 7 Oregon State Beavers (39-12-1) opened their final regular-season series of 2025 with a 2-1 win over the Long Beach State Dirtbags (22-29) on Thursday, May 15, at Goss Stadium.

Right-hander Eric Segura (8-1) made his first start at Goss and earned his first win in front of the home crowd, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

After starting 15 Sunday games as a freshman in 2025, the sophomore has spent most of the year as the “piggyback” to opening day starter Nelson Keljo. Segura was promoted back into the weekend rotation ahead of the Beavers’ series-opener against Hawai’i on May 2, and has made three starts since.

Segura’s start against LBSU was his best of the three, retiring 15 of the first 16 batters he faced. A lone hit-by-pitch giving the Dirtbags their lone baserunner through five innings. After recording the first two outs of the sixth on just five pitches, Segura let up a walk, another HBP and an RBI-single to LBSU centerfielder Matt Champagne, breaking up Segura’s no-hitter and ending his day with six strikeouts.

“(Segura was) good, his stuff was jumping a lot and (he was) landing the breaking ball,” Beavers head coach Mitch Canham said. “That last inning, he was missing his spots based on what we were calling and, you know, (we) were able to read the situation and see it was time to go to the next guy.”

Kellan Oakes came on in relief to finish off the sixth. He also spun a scoreless seventh despite allowing a walk and a hit, as well as helping turn an inning-ending double play, before exiting.

Wyatt Queen finished off the game, earning his second save of the season with two innings of relief. The right-hander struck out the side in the eighth and recorded the final three outs with a pair of fly outs and a pop-up. It was his second-straight, multi-inning relief appearance in which he did not allow a run.

“(Queen was) outstanding,” Canham said. “Sharp slider, looked good with his breath. Once he takes the rubber and starts his motion, you can tell he’s just dialed in. It was very clean stuff.”

Oregon State mustered just three hits in the win, holding the Dirtbags to two of their own.

Centerfielder Canon Reeder’s two-run homer in the second netted the Beavers both of their runs, driving in second baseman AJ Singer (who singled) in the process. A leadoff single by Gavin Turley in the eighth was Oregon State’s only other knock.

Cold weather and an overcast day at Goss played a factor in keeping some fly balls — namely two fly outs to deep center by Turley and shortstop Aiva Arquette —in the park, Canham said, but Reeder’s tank proved to be enough.

“We hit a handful of balls really hard,” Canham said. “Goss got (us) today on those deep drives to center (by Turley and Arquette). So we’re wearing out the centerfield warning track. (I) told everybody, ‘Lets go do a couple of pushups and get back at it tomorrow.'”

Game two between Oregon State and Long Beach State is set to get underway at 5:35 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at Goss Stadium.
