Cleveland’s Kate Ly, Ida B. Wells’ Lennon Schmidt highlight local girls golfers at state

Plenty of Portland high school girls golfers traveled south May 19-20 for the Oregon high school 6A state tournament at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell.
Cleveland, winners of the PIL and lone local team representative, sent its whole team and had a strong showing, finishing in sixth place with a 136-over 712.
Leading the charge was PIL individual champion Kate Ly, who finished in a tie for sixth place with a two-day score of 5-over 149. The junior shot a 4-over 76 on day one and returned with a 1-over 73 for day two.
Ly was flanked by her teammates in freshman Sara Maderos took 37th (36-over 180), sophomore Brielle Schneider in 43rd (41-over 185), junior Mei Tyvand in 62nd (54-over 198) and freshman Sydney Hamel in 82nd (76-over 220).
Westview sophomore Melinee Udom won the individual tournament title at 5-under 139, meanwhile, Lake Oswego won the team title at 49-over 625.
Six other individuals made the trip to Creswell from six different Portland schools to help represent the Rose City.
Wells freshman Lennon Schmidt was the next best local finisher after Ly, taking home a medal with a ninth place finish. She finished at 8-over 152 after shooting a 2-over 74 in round one and a 6-over 78 in round two.
Up next was Grant junior Abby Amico who finished in a tie for 35th with a 35-over 179 mark. Lincoln freshman Jade Malech wasn’t far behind in a tie for 37th at 36-over 180.
One spot below that was Central Catholic freshman Berkley Beam taking home 39th thanks to a 38-over 182 mark.
David Douglas sent junior Olivia Satterthwaite to the tournament and she took home 60th place with a 51-over 195 score.
Nerissa Griffith from St. Mary’s Academy rounds out the local group. The junior took 69th with a 61-over 205.
Portland also had a small school representative at the 4A/3A/2A/1A state championship played at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.
Riverdale qualified its team to state where the Mavericks took 10th overall as a team with a 215-over 783 score.
A trio of seniors all tied for 45th to lead the way in Jayden Pridemore, Hallie McCarthy and Dylan Plush. They all scored a 52-over 194.
Next was senior Sofia D’Uva in 56th with a score of 59-over 201, followed by senior Emilia Mudrick in 71st with a score of 123-over 265.
