A centennial celebration will take place to honor the Joan of Arc statue in the Laurelhurst Neighborhood’s Coe Circle, and to honor World War I American infantrymen known as “doughboys.”
The event is cosponsored by the Multnomah-Portland Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Laurelhurst Neighborhood Association.
The event is set for 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, at Coe Circle, at the intersection of Northeast Glisan Street and Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard. It is open to the public. Joining the community in this celebration will be The Royal Rosarians, members of St. Stephen Catholic Church, the Alliance Francaise de Portland, Portland Woman’s Club, as well as members of the neighborhood association and Daughters of the American Revolution.
A reception will follow at 11:45 a.m., although the capacity for that event has been reached, according to organizers.
According to the Regional Arts and Culture Council, Portlander Dr. Henry Waldo Coe commissioned a casting of the sculpture in 1924 as a monument to the Portland area World War One soldiers, or “doughboys,” also known as the American Expeditionary Forces, who were closely allied with the French. A dedication was held on May 30,1925, with a reading of remarks from President Calvin Coolidge and French President Gaston Doumergue.
The sculpture was rededicated in May 2002 following a major restoration project that came about after nearly three years of grassroots planning and fundraising.
The Multnomah-Portland chapter of the DAR was founded in 1896 and is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. The chapter participates in projects to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. It will celebrate 130 years of service in 2026.
