December 20, 1926 – April 16, 2025 – Virginia Marie Butler, born December 20, 1926, in Mason City, Iowa, passed away on April 16, 2025, in Portland, Oregon, at the age of 98.

Virginia was the third of four children born to Fred and Ruth Fankell and was raised in Clear Lake, Iowa. In high school, she played flute in the band and served as a drum majorette, showcasing skill in baton twirling.

Following World War II, Virginia moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked in the typing pools of the FBI alongside her sister Wauneta. It was during a summer visit back to Clear Lake that Virginia met Howard Butler. The two married in 1946 and later moved west to Oregon, where Howard took over his uncle’s dealership, Butler Chevrolet in Newberg.

Virginia and Howard shared a deep bond and many interests. When Howard took up fishing or golf, Virginia joined right in, never one to be left behind. They enjoyed golfing together at Riverwood in Dundee and McNary in Keizer. They shared a love for outdoor activities, extended to crabbing and fishing in Newport Bay aboard their boat, the Golden Angel.

Virginia also loved playing bridge, reading, traveling the world, and cheering on the Oregon State Beavers. Hosting gatherings brought them joy, especially when surrounded by family and friends.
A cherished tradition was taking their 11 grandchildren on beach trips, two at a time, creating lasting memories across generations. Virginia leaves behind three daughters: Sandy (Mike) Woodley, Sharon (John) Krauss, and Laurie (Gary) Wold; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 3 great
great-grandchildren.

Virginia and Howard shared nearly 70 years of marriage. Their legacy lives on through a large and loving family who will forever remember the laughter and strength of the girl from Clear Lake.
