Portland area residents are facing rising hot temperates and scheduled road closures during the weekend.

Temperatures are expected to climb from the mid-80s on Friday, June 6, to 89 on Saturday, and 96 on Sunday, threatening to challenge the current local record. Multnomah County is not expecting to open cooling centers, however, because the forecasted temperatures don’t break its threshold.

“All of us have some sensitivity to it because none of our bodies have acclimated to this heat yet. So the important thing is to realize is that each of us needs to take some protective action, to make sure we don’t get sick from the heat,” Brendon Haggerty with the Multnomah County Health Department said.

At the same time, many people are expected to be outside, in large part because the 2025 Rose Festival through downtown Portland scheduled on Saturday. Many streets in the Central City will be closed because of it.

Getting there could be a problem because Highway 217 southbound will be fully closed from Canyon Road to OR-99W starting Friday night through early Monday as part of a recurring summer construction project. TriMet is also blocking of lanes on 82nd Avenue for a lengthy bus station renovation.

TriMet says MAX and bus lines are still the best way to reach downtown Portland for the Grand Floral Parade, but advise riders to check their website for updates before heading out.

After that, westbound I-84 will shut down between I-205 and I-5 from midnight Saturday until 4 p.m. Sunday. Crews will be doing maintenance and graffiti cleanup, forcing TriMet to pause MAX service in the area. Shuttle buses will fill the gaps.

The next day, drivers should expect Steel and Burnside bridge lifts in downtown as the ships gathered for the Rose Festival’s Fleet Week depart. The lifts will affect TriMet bus, MAX and Portland Streetcar service, likely causing delays during the Monday morning commute.
