Famous movie

Heads up: It’s a party at Hollywood Theatre to celebrate the 1979 movie “The Mystery of Chess Boxing,” regarded as one of the best kung fu movies of all time and a major influence of Wu Tang Clan. It’ll be 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 2 ($45 for film and Q&A, $100 for film, Q&A and VIP after-party at Lan Su Chinese Garden). Rapper RZA will be there in person for a post-film conversation with film programmer Dan Halsted, and he’ll do a DJ set at the after-party.

The film’s plot is about a young kung fu fighter who trains under a master of chess, so they can battle “The Ghost Face Killer,” a villain who is killing off his old rivals. Halsted, the Hollywood Theatre’s head film programmer, owns the only known 35mm print, and RZA’s company 36 Cinema acquired the rights and made a digital restoration of the film.

Waterfront Blues Festival

Another heads up: It’s all systems go for the 2025 Waterfront Blues Festival, for the 38th year of the popular summer event at Tom McCall Waterfront Park (waterfrontbluesfest.com). It’s two days in 2025, July 4-5, rather than four. There also will be two stages, rather than four, located in the bowl area of the park alongside the Willamette River. The lineup has a diversity of genres — blues, soul, funk, Americana, and R&B. The lineup of soulful songwriters, danceable bands, rising stars and beloved local voices includes: Allen Stone, The Main Squeeze, The Record Company, The Motet, Southern Avenue, Son Little, Low Cut Connie, Oh He Dead, Come to Mama — Etta James Celebration, Psychedelic Soul Revue, Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle and Norman Sylvester.
