Portland Fire & Rescue said the pod was nearly “completely consumed by fire” within minutes of crews arriving on scene
A person died Monday evening after a fire consumed their living pod at a North Portland safe rest homeless shelter.
At 5:51 p.m., crews were dispatched to the North Portland Road Safe Rest Village for reports of a single living pod that was “almost completely burned to the ground,” according to Portland Fire & Rescue. Numerous callers reported the quickly working fire, and said within a few minutes of fire crews’ dispatch the pod was nearly demolished by the flames.
Fire crews arrived at 5:56 p.m., and confirmed the pod was nearly completely consumed by fire.
Officials said the fire was contained to the single pod and was extinguished with a small amount of water, but the occupant inside did not survive.
The PF&R and Portland Police Bureau Fire Investigations Unit is working to discover the cause of the fire.
PF&R noted that staff members present at the site used many handheld fire extinguishers in an attempt at reducing or eliminating the fire prior to the arrival of any fire crews. Unfortunately, the fire was too hot and too large to be completely extinguished using the handheld extinguishers, PF&R said.
Officials said information regarding the identity of the individual and cause of the fire will be released later.
