PSU fires Nigel Burton

Portland State is in the market for a new head football coach.

The Vikings appointed offensive coordinator Bruce Barnum as interim head coach Wednesday and fired Nigel Burton, who had one year left on his contract at $187,500.

Under the terms of his contract, if Burton is gets a football coaching job next year, he will be paid the difference between his contract payout and a new salary.

Burton was 21-36 in five seasons as Jerry Glanville’s successor. The Vikings finished 3-9 this season, 2-6 in the Big Sky.

“We have great student-athletes and staff. They deserve the chance to be successful,” interim athletic director Valerie Cleary said in a statement released by Portland State.
