Robert Nelson, 90, passed away peacefully at home in Portland, OR. He was born in Boise, ID to Victor and Virginia (Hammer) Nelson. Tragically, Virginia died in childbirth but the piano she left behind greatly influenced Robert’s musical life. Victor subsequently married Etta Edgar, who recognized and fostered Robert’s musical desire and abilities.
Robert (Bob) attended Boise Junior College and the University of Idaho, earning a Master’s in Piano Performance with studies in composition and organ. He taught music in Idaho and California and was an adjudicator for the National Guild of Piano Teachers. Bob lived in Oregon for many years and enjoyed music, reading, nature, walks, good food and conversation. His family and friends will miss him dearly.
He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Carole, his former wife Betty, and his son Brian. He is survived by two sisters, three children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.
His family is deeply grateful to the care teams at Providence Elderplace (Laurelhurst), Laurelhurst Village, and Lydia and Alex Benzar for their care and concern for Bob and his family.
A memorial service will be held Sat. October 17, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Laurelhurst Village chapel, 3060 SE Stark St, Portland. A musical celebration of life is planned for Boise in spring 2016.
