Portland Center Stage
Reminder: Portland Center Stage stages “Chris Grace: As Scarlett Johansson,” through June 22 at The Armory (pcs.org). In a one-person farce, Asian American actor and comedian Chris Grace explores the bounds of an artist’s identity with the help of an ever-growing pile of wigs.
Live Music

The outdoor concert season gets underway in May, as the newly renamed Cascades Amphitheater in Ridgefield, Washington hosts legendary UK band Simple Minds on its “Alive & Kicking Tour 2025” on May 16. It’s the band’s biggest North American live run in four decades. It’ll be a big 1980s concert: Soft Cell and Modern English also perform (cascadesamphitheater.com). Portland Cello Project’s “Sunshine & Stars” show features the music of Weezer and Stevie Wonder, and includes special guest Maiah Wynne, 8 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at Revolution Hall (revolutionhall.com).
It’s quite a back-to-back night affair of music at Keller Auditorium. First up, it’s jazz singer Diana Krall making a tour stop at 8 p.m. May 19, followed the next night with Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit performing at 8 p.m. May 20 (portland5.com).
‘Live Wire Radio’
Host Luke Burbank and announcer Elena Passarello present the latest stage-variety show “Live Wire Radio,” 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15 welcoming reporter/radio host/podcaster Sam Sanders, comedian Sam Miller and folk pop group Kuinka at Alberta Rose Theatre.

‘Falstaff’
Reminder: Portland Opera continues with Giuseppe Verdi’s classic “Falstaff,” 7:30 p.m. May 16 and 2 p.m. May 18 at Keller Auditorium. The fast-paced and rollicking updated comedy revolves around the witty yet scheming Sir John Falstaff, set in a 1983 country club (portlandopera.org).
UFO Fest
The 25th Annual UFO Festival takes place May 16-17 in McMinnville, headquartered at McMenamins’ Hotel Oregon. Celebrate all things extraterrestrial with expert talks, an outlandish Alien Costume Parade, Alien Pet Costume Contest, Alien Abduction Dash 5k and more. Don your best alien attire and join the fun in downtown McMinnville. African dance
Rejoice Diaspora Dance Theater presents Sebe Kan Youth African Dance at Newmark Theatre, 7 p.m. Friday, May 16. The performance is “Mobaya: Coming of Age” and it’s a vibrant, multi-generational dance that brings to life the cultural traditions of Mali and Guinea through live West African music.

Hillsboro air show
Engines will be roaring and jets will be streaking through the sky above Washington County for the 37th annual Oregon International Air Show in Hillsboro, Friday-Sunday, May 16-18. It’s based at Hillsboro Municipal Airport and will feature military demo teams as well as heritage military aircraft and civilian performers. The show is also held in McMinnville each year.

Vanport Mosaic
The people, city and legacy of Vanport, 77 years after the devastating flood of 1948, will be commemorated in the 10th annual Vanport Mosaic Festival, May 17-June 1. Vanport Mosaic documents stories, preserves the history and shares the knowledge of Vanport at various venues and in various ways.

Sound Garden Series
Out in Hillsboro, join the Portland Youth Philharmonic for an afternoon of classical music blended with the sounds of Persia, featuring newly composed works by Farhad Poupel, Kamyar Mohaher and Bobak Salehi in the Sound Garden Series. Guest artists Hossein and Bobak Salehi from ArtMax Academy will accompany the orchestra, and the program also includes “Symphony for String Orchestra” by Polina Nazaykinskaya, along with a solo performance by a PYP musician. The 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17 show is at the Walters Cultural Arts Center, 527 E. Main St. in Hillsboro.
Oregon Symphony
Celebrate spring with the Oregon Symphony’s concert “Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue,” May 17-19 at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. It’s conducted by Kevin John Edusei, and along with “Rhapsody in Blue,” which features pianist Makoto Ozone, the concert includes “Prisms, Cycles, Leaps” by Derrick Skye, “Scherzo fantastique” by Suk and “Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin” by Bartok. Concerts are 7:30 p.m. May 17, 2 p.m. May 18 and 7:30 p.m. May 19.

Bricks Cascade 2025
Oh, this is a big draw, as thousands of Legos enthusiasts gather for Bricks Cascade 2025 at Oregon Convention Center, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, May 17-18. There’ll be creations from hundreds of builders from the Pacific Northwest and around the world, and opportunities to talk with their builders and leave your own mark on the Wall of Creation. Race your own brick-built car on the derby track and build your own creation in one of the creation stations.
