April 11, 1928 – December 3, 2024 –

Edward W. Davie, most recently from Concord, New Hampshire, passed away on December 3rd, 2024. He was 96.

Ed, known to his Forest Grove United Methodist Church friends as the “Gentle Bass”, was born to Harold and Christine (Lamphere) Davie on April 11, 1928, in Hornell, New York. After graduating from Alfred State University in Alfred, NY, with a degree in Ceramic Engineering, he married his first wife, Rosalie (Lee) Ruth (Morgan) Davie, settling shortly thereafter on a “gentleman’s farm” in Bainbridge, NY. He was employed by Bendix, Corp. (Amphenol) in the small town of Sidney, NY. His focus there was in Metrology (measurements, calibration and QC) and there he remained until his retirement around 1990. During their marriage, Ed and Lee were very active in church, first in the Guilford United Methodist Church, where Ed and his children sang in the choir, then active in the Friends Meetings of Oneonta, Rogers Hollow, and Norwich, NY. Upon retirement, Ed and his second wife, Roberta (Berta) (Black) Davie, packed up their household and moved across country to Forest Grove, Oregon. While Berta continued her music career, Ed ran his own “Typewrite” business and aided the Oregon Music Teachers Association (OMTA) with printed works. His love of Oregon held Ed there for the next 33 years. After Berta passed, Ed met and married Patricia (Pat/Patty) (Flaming) Davie. They built a home together in Forest Grove and remained married for over 25 years, until Patty’s passing in 2023. During their marriage, Ed and Patty were very active in the Forest Grove United Methodist Church where Ed did everything from singing in the choir, to plumbing, to printing the monthly newsletter. With Patty’s passing, and with his own health declining, Ed decided it was time to move back East where he could be closer to his children and grandchildren. It was in Concord, New Hampshire, near his daughter, Elaine, and son-in-law Steve that he settled in 2023 and remained until his death one year later.

Ed was a man of many talents and interests. At an early age, he became fascinated with photography, and spent many years photographing and developing his own pictures. He was an avid Amateur Astronomer and built his own telescope which he loved to share with his five children. Related to his love of the heavens, Ed cherished flying small planes, having obtained his pilot’s license before his driver’s license. He spoke of staying just above the clouds where he could appreciate the blue sky above and “land” on the puffy cloud base below him. During his early adult years, he spent many long hours on his ham radio, keeping in communication with both family and friends. Ed progressed from building complex airplane models to carpentry skills, which he learned from his father, Harold. This came in very handy when renovating portions of the farm where he and Lee raised their 5 children. With his calligraphy abilities, many documents were created by his hand. And once settled in Oregon, his passion for gardening, particularly roses, was evident by the foliage that surrounded his home.

Ed leaves a large family legacy. Although his parents and three wives have passed, his children, Linda (Davie) Garner and spouse, David Garner (Jefferson, NY) , Morgan Davie and spouse, Ginny (Strally) Davie (Hudson, FL), Stephen Davie and spouse, Kate (Pollender) Davie (Ryegate, VT), Elaine (Davie) Rust and spouse, Stephen Rust (Hopkinton, NH), and Keith Davie and spouse, Nicki Dunbar (Rockland, ME), remain behind. Ed’s brother, Richard Davie (Palmyra, WI) and foster sister, Donna (Hawley) Woolever with spouse, David Woolever (Canisteo, NY), also remain behind as well as 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial is planned for spring, 2025. Time and location are yet to be determined. Donations may be made to the Forest Grove United Methodist Church, 1726 Cedar St, Forest Grove, Oregon 97116. Ed will be interned with his first wife, Rosalie Ruth (Morgan) Davie at a yet undisclosed resting place.
