October 23, 1933 – November 30, 2024 – Bruce Edward Oester, a man defined by dedication, compassion, and integrity, gently passed away at the age of 91 on November 30, 2024, in Vancouver, Washington. Born on October 23, 1933, in Warren, OR Bruce led a rich life, firmly rooted in family values and community service.
In 1950, Bruce married his beloved Ruth Ann Herring. Their union was blessed with five children: Deborah, Dale, Michael, Tracy and Lynnette. 10 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. The joy and warmth that Bruce found in the presence of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was visible to all who knew him.
Bruce in his career had been a longshoreman and fireman, before finding his calling in police work. As a policeman, detective, deputy sheriff, and ultimately the elected sheriff of Columbia County, at the time of his death his was the oldest living Sheriff in the state of Oregon. Bruce applied his keen sense of justice and fairness to serve and protect.
He was a proud member of the Elks, Kiwanis and Knights of Columbus. Bruce was known for his warmth and generosity. He loved to garden and was known to feed the entire neighborhood with his produce. His engaging smile and ready willingness to lend a helping hand were touchstones of his personality.
Bruce loved the great outdoors and would be found hunting, fishing, cutting wood, exploring the woods and trails anytime he could. He loved to travel, especially in his RV going across the US. Exploring every road and city!
Bruce was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Ann, as well as his parents, John Joseph and Carrie Oester. In his absence, he leaves behind a family who continues to honor his memory: his daughters including Deborah Oester, (Oscar Cerrillo) Tracy Beck, (Douglas), Lynnette Turner (Joeeph) —his sons, including Dale Oester and Michael Oester, (Kellie), and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A funeral service in Bruce’s honor will be at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church located at 51555 SW Old Portland Road in Scappoose, Oregon. Wednesday, December 11, 2024, with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow, providing an opportunity to share memories and stories of a life well-lived. Viewing will be Tuesday from 2:00-5:00pm at Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens.
