Three Mt. Hood Community College alumni honored with awards, ceremony

A trio of extraordinary Saints were honored earlier this month.

Mt. Hood Community College celebrated the achievements of David Cress, Melonie Powell and Ken Richardson, all of whom were named Alumni of the Year during a ceremony Wednesday, Dec. 4.
“These honorees embody the values of MHCC—resilience, leadership, and a commitment to positive change,” said Dr. Lisa Skari, MHCC president. “Their stories are a powerful reminder of how education can unlock potential, inspire change, and strengthen our community.”
David Cress is a Hollywood producer known for “Portlandia” and “Montage of Heck.” He credits Mt. Hood Community College for giving him real-world experience that shaped his career.

“MHCC allowed me to work fulltime while pursuing my degree, and that flexibility was essential to my success,” he said.
Cress is now an advocate for Oregon’s growing film industry, and he is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of filmmakers.
Melonie Powell is a public health leader dedicated to improving healthcare for underserved communities. She is a nurse and educator.
“MHCC gave me the tools to build a better future,” Powell said.
Ken Richardson is superintendent of the David Douglas School District. He said the college gave him a foundation to follow a career dedicated to serving students.
“Education is a lifestyle for me,” he explained. “MHCC was integral in giving me the jump start I needed to succeed in higher education and beyond.”
“It is a place where you not only gain knowledge, but build the connections and confidence to transform your future,” he added.
