Portland Trail Blazers extend contract of general manager Joe Cronin

Portland Trail Blazers general manager Joe Cronin has reached a contract extension with the organization, announced Monday by the team. The amount of years and salary were not disclosed.

Cronin has held the position since Dec. 3, 2021, after previous GM Neil Olshey was fired and Cronin was named as interim. Cronin was officially given the position on May 10, 2022.

Cronin has been at the forefront of reshaping the entire Blazers’ roster, which included the trade of star Damian Lillard back on Sept. 27, 2023.

That trade and related moves landed Portland players in Deandre Ayton, Deni Avdija and Toumani Camara, all of whom have become staples of the rotation.

Cronin has led the Blazers in the last three drafts as well, which have brought in Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, Donovan Clingan, Jabari Walker and Kris Murray to name a few.

“Joe has demonstrated leadership and vision during his time as General Manager, and I’m excited to see him continue building the foundation for a long-term, winning team,” Jody Allen, Blazers chair, said in a press release. “We are all thrilled with the team’s forward momentum and excited for the future of Trail Blazers basketball.”

There hasn’t been a ton of winning under Cronin’s leadership, but that’s been more by design as the team has tried to build up through the draft.

The Blazers finished the 2021-2022 season with a 27-55 record, followed by a 33-49 record in 2022-2023 and then a 21-61 mark in the 2023-2024 season.

This year, the Blazers have seen some minimal growth in the standings, only being eliminated from Play-In Tournament contention on Sunday, April 6, as they currently own a 35-44 record, the ninth-worst record in the league.

Players like Avdija and Camara have made a name for themselves this season with Avdija being an offensive weapon in the second half and Camara continuing his defensive coming out party this season.

“I am honored that Jody and (vice chair Bert Kolde) have put their continued trust in me and thank them for believing in this opportunity to further our pursuit of building a winning team in Portland,” Cronin said in a press release. “My vision is to have a competitive roster with the potential for sustained success, while creating a culture that helps all our players, coaches and staff thrive. I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come.”

Cronin has been with the Blazers for 19 years, starting as a basketball operations intern in 2006 and moving up to become a pro scout/salary cap analyst in 2010 and director of player personnel in 2014.

Portland has three games left this season, starting with a 6 p.m. tipoff Wednesday, April 9, at Utah. The final two games will be at home at 7 p.m. Friday, April 11 against Golden State, and 12:30 p.m. Sunday, April 13 against the Los Angeles Lakers.
