Fall playoff roundup: 10 local soccer teams alive, Portland Christian volleyball heads to state

Fifteen high school teams in the city of Portland competed in the first round of the Oregon high school boys and girls soccer state tournament on Saturday, Nov. 2.

And after an action-packed day on the pitch, 10 of those 15 are still alive and moving on to the second round in 6A.

Not only that, but the second round of the 6A girls volleyball state tournament took place, along with the 2A first round featuring Portland Christian.

The state volleyball tournaments conclude this weekend, Nov. 8-9, at host sites where champions will be crowned.

The second round for boys soccer is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 5, so if you’re reading this in print, head to portlandtribune.com for the latest coverage.

As for the girls, their second round is Wednesday, Nov. 6, so make sure to check out a match if you can.

Here’s a roundup of the first round of action and what’s next:

Volleyball

No. 8 Grant 3, No. 9 Sheldon 2: Not only did the Generals host a second-round matchup for the first time in program history, they won it in thrilling fashion 19-25, 25-17, 17-25, 28-26, 15-13.

Down to their final point three times in the fourth, the Generals fended off each match point and won the set 28-26. And in the fifth, Grant finished on a 3-0 run to win it 15-13 and punch their ticket to Forest Grove High School.

Up next is No. 1 seed Jesuit at 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8.

No. 6 Portland Christian 3, No. 11 Monroe 0: The reigning 2A state champion Royals are heading back to Redmond after dominating visiting Monroe. The Royals won the match 25-17, 25-21, 25-3 to reach the quarterfinals for a second consecutive year.

Up next for PC will be a matchup with No. 3 seed Western Christian, set to begin at 3:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at Ridgeview High School.

No. 7 Westview 3, No. 10 Central Catholic: The Rams saw their season come to a close on the road in the 26-24, 25-9, 25-17 loss to Westview. Central Catholic finishes the year at 19-7 overall.

Girls soccer

No. 9 St. Mary’s Academy 2, No. 24 Sunset 1: The Blues are back in the playoffs and winning this time, downing the visiting Apollos 2-1 at Buckman Field. Senior Amelia Nelson and freshman Finley Martin provided the two goals to send SMA to the second round.

Up next is a matchup with No. 8 David Douglas, game time is set for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 6.

No. 8 David Douglas 2, No. 25 Cleveland 1: Two goals from sophomore Lucy Kimball in the second half made the difference for the Scots, who picked up their first-ever playoff win by downing the Warriors 2-1. Lola Pierce scored on a penalty kick for Cleveland in the closing minutes.

The Scots will welcome in St. Mary’s Academy in the next round at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 6.

No. 3 Central Catholic 4, No. 30 Sherwood 0: The Rams dominated to open the 2024 postseason and improve to 14-1 on the season as Mt. Hood Conference champions.

Central Catholic will welcome in No. 14 Beaverton next at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at Centennial High School.

No. 14 Beaverton 2, No. 19 Ida B. Wells 1 (OT): Speaking of the Beavers, they needed overtime to drop the visiting Guardians and survive to the next round.

Wells finishes the year 9-4-2 after a third place finish in the PIL.

No. 7 Lincoln 5, No. 26 Roseburg 0: There was no slowing down the Cardinals in the first round as the PIL second-place squad ran away with the victory.

Lincoln will be back at home for the second round, hosting No. 10 Mountainside at a time still to be determined on Nov. 6.

No. 2 Grant 4, No. 31 South Salem 0: The defending 6A state champions in the Generals are back into the second round with a dominating win over the Saxons.

Grant will look to keep the good times rolling in the second round against No. 18 Lake Oswego at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at Delta Park.

Boys soccer

No. 17 Ida B. Wells 2, No. 16 Grants Pass 1 (OT): The Guardians made the long trek down south worth it by coming through in overtime over the Cavemen 2-1.

Kaden To and Gabe Rudisill scored the two goals to lift Wells into the second round where it will take on No. 1 Lakeridge at 7 p.m. Nov. 5.

No. 8 Grant 1, No. 25 Lake Oswego 0: The PIL co-champion Generals withstood a tough task from the Lakers to win 1-0 in the opening round of the 6A state tournament.

Up next is a rematch from an early season matchup against No. 9 West Linn. Grant won the first match 2-0 to open the season, and will look to repeat that performance at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at Delta Park.

No. 12 Franklin 2, No. 21 Mountainside 1: The Lightning held off the Mavericks at home 2-1 to begin a quest in the 2024 state tournament. Franklin won the 2019 state title as a 14 seed and are hoping 12 can be a lucky number as well.

Franklin will have to hit the road next though, taking on No. 5 Sherwood at 7 p.m. Nov. 5.

No. 13 Roosevelt 3, No. 20 David Douglas 2: Who else but Owen Nathan? The Roosevelt all-time career leading goal scorer put home a header in the final minutes to close out the 3-2 win over the Scots and send the Roughriders to the second round.

Jack Thompson and a David Douglas own goal supplied the other two scores. Roosevelt heads west to take on No. 4 McMinnville in the second at 6 p.m. Nov. 5.

No. 19 Westview 2, No. 14 Central Catholic 1: Make it two seasons ended by Westview for the Rams as the boys soccer team fell at Centennial High School 2-1.

CC finished the year as MHC champions with a 7-3-5 overall record.

No. 11 Lincoln 3, No. 22 Barlow 0: The Cardinals got a first-half goal from senior Pablo Guevara, followed by a second-half brace from junior Harlan Novy-Marx to open the postseason with a win over the Bruins.

Lincoln heads south next to take on No. 6 South Eugene at 6 p.m. Nov. 5.

No. 6 South Eugene 2, No. 27 Cleveland 1: The Warriors couldn’t quite make it a 6-0 day for the PIL, falling on the road to the Axe 2-1.

Charlie Kibben scored an equalizer in the second half to knot it at 1, but the Axe broke through one more time in the closing moments to win the match. Cleveland ends its season at 6-8-2 overall.
