Big second period gives Winterhawks come-from-behind victory

The Portland Winterhawks roared back to win on Friday and even their season record at 9-9.

The Hawks rallied from 3-0 deficit with five goals in a row, as they toppled visiting Swift Current 5-4 at Memorial Coliseum.

The Broncos (8-9-2-0) had a 3-0 lead after 14:59.

Portland’s Keegan Iverson scored with 1:12 left in the first period, extending his career-high point streak to seven games.

Then the Winterhawks added four goals in the key second period.

Skyler McKenzie cut the deficit to 3-2, tipping a shot past goaltender Landow Bow despite being knocked to the ice.

At 6:32 and while shorthanded, Dominic Turgeon stole the puck at the blue line and fed teammate Alex Overhardt for the tying goal.

Two minutes later, during a 4-on-4, Rihards Bukarts scored to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead. At 10:53, Iverson scored on a power play.

Swift Current cut the gap to 5-4 at 3:27 of the third period, but Portland held on.

For the Winterhawks, defenseman Caleb Jones had three assists for the second time in three games. Abols had two assists.

Adin Hill picked up the win, making 26 saves.

Portland was 1 for 6 on the power play and 3 for 3 on the penalty kill, with the shorthanded goal.

The Hawks play Saturday at Vancouver.
