Construction is under way for a sidewalk near the Parkrose Middle School campus.

Portland Bureau of Transportation crews began constructing a sidewalk during the week of July 8 on the south side of Northeast Shaver Street between Northeast 115th Avenue and Parkrose Middle School.

Once completed, the project will boast a new 6-foot sidewalk, seven new or updated curb ramps that are compliant with the Americans Disabilities Act and a marked crosswalk at Northeast 115th Avenue to improve pedestrian access for Parkrose students and neighbors.

To add to the project, 10 new street trees will be planted along the project area.

Travel delays and impacts

Vehicle lanes on Northeast Shaver Street will be narrowed during construction, but travel in both directions will be maintained. Pedestrian access is provided with cones or barricades in active work areas.

Portland Bureau of Transportation urges the traveling public to move slowly and with caution in work zones, and to be aware of detours and directions by reader boards and flaggers.

Using alternate routes when possible is recommended.

The public can expect dust, noise, vibrations and heavy equipment near the work zone.

The work is weather-dependent and the schedule may change.

Why this area?

PBOT identified the segment of Northeast Shaver Street as an important connection for students of Parkrose Middle School.

During a Safe Routes to School outreach in 2017, walking routes and challenging connections were highlighted by school communities.

In connect with the neighboring project, Northeast Shaver Street from Northeast 102nd to 115th Avenues sidewalk construction, access for walking should be improved.

This project by the Parkrose Middle School campus is funded by the Fixing Our Streets 10-cent citywide gas tax approved by voters in May 2016, and again in May 2020 and 2024.
