Honor the military fallen at local Memorial Day events

Memorial Day events are scheduled throughout the Portland region on Monday, May 26. They all honor our fallen military members, regardless of when and where they served.

In Portland, a ceremony for those who lost their lives or are still missing in action from the Vietnam War will be held at 10 a.m. at the Vietnam Veterans of Oregon Memorial, 4000 S.W. Canyon Rd.

The largest regional annual commemoration will take place at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mt. Scott Blvd., Happy Valley, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

In Beaverton, a ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park at the intersection of Southwest Watson Avenue and Southwest Seventh Street. It will include patriot music by the American Legion Post 185 Band, the reading of a proclamation by Mayor Lacey Beaty, and an appearance by U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici.

In Newberg, Veterans of Foreign War Post 4015 of Greater Yamhill County and Lester Reese Post 57 of the American Legion will join forces with the Newberg-Dundee Police Department and the Chehalem Park and Recreation District to stage the annual Memorial Day observance at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park.

In Tualatin, the city government and Tualatin VFW will once again host the annual Memorial Day observance at 10:45 a.m. on the west side of Tualatin Lake at the Commons, located at 8325 S.W. Nyberg St. The morning will not only pay tribute to military veterans, but also includes a 9:30 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony for the recently completed Veterans Plaza.

Oregon-based U.S. Air Force F-15 Eagles will make scheduled passes at several ceremonies in the area. They include 9:14 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Gresham, 10:13 a.m. at Mt. View Cemetery in Oregon City, 10:15 a.m. at Willamette National Cemetery, 11:06 a.m. at the Belle Passi Cemetery in Woodburn, 11:11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Beaverton, 11:15 a.m. at Fir Lawn Memorial Park in Hillsboro, and 11:16 a.m. at Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove.

Leading up to Memorial Day, American flags were at many cemeteries. They included at 154 veteran graves at the Oswego Pioneer Cemetery by members of the Tualatin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The cemetery off Stafford Road holds veterans of the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I and II, the Korean War and the Iraq War.
