WOMEN’S WORLD CUP

Host Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinals, losing 2-1 to England at BC Place in Vancouver.

England, which took an early 2-0 lead and hung on, will meet defending champion Japan in one semifinal, with the U.S. and Germany playing in the other semi.

Christine Sinclair, Portland Thorns forward and former University of Portland star, scored for Canada.

MARINERS FALL

The Los Angeles Angels beat Seattle 4-2, as the Mariners got eight hits but only single runs in the sixth and eighth innings (catcher Mike Zunino’s home run).

L.A. got two runs in the bottom of the first (Kole Calhoun two-run HR) and two in the seventh.

Happ went seven innings, alliowing five hits and four runs, with six strikeouts and two walks.

The Mariners slipped to 34-41, while the Angels improved to 38-37.

The rubber match of the three-game series is 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

HOPS LOSE LATE

The Vancouver Canadians scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to knock off the visiting Hillsboro Hops 4-3.

Hillsboro led 3-0 after scoring all its runs in the fourth. Vancouver chipped away with single runs in the fourth and sixth.

Shortstop Sergio Alcantara (3 for 4) led the Hops’ eight-hit attack. He had one of two Hops doubles and extra-base hits.

Reliever Ariel Hernandez (1-1) took the loss. He gave up singles to the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth, then let in the tying run with a wild pitch. After two more strikeouts and another wild pitch, Vancouver’s JC Cardenas singled to right field to bring home the winning run.

Both teams are 5-5. The Canadians lead the five-game series 2-0.

OREGON AMATEUR

Alistair Docherty of Vancouver, Wash., 5 down after 15 holes, rallied for a 2 and 1 victory against Medford’s Dylan Wu and the men’s championship at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha.

Beaverton’s Gigi Stoll birdied the 30th hole to win the women’s final 8 and 6 over Madison Odiorne of Bend.

WINTERHAWKS DRAFTED

Portland Winterhawks players Paul Bittner, Adin Hill and Caleb Jones were selected in the NHL draft — Bitter was drafted in the second round, 38th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets; Hill was selected in the third round, 76th overall by the Arizona Coyotes; and Jones was taken in the fourth round, 117th overall by the Edmonton Oilers.

The Hawks have now had players drafted in seven consecutive years, with 27 taken in that span.
