Spokane scored four goals on its first six shots, chasing Portland Winterhawks goalie Ondrej Stebetak, and never looked back in Game 1 of the Western Hockey League Western Conference finals.

The host Chiefs beat Portland 10-4 Friday at Spokane, showing the firepower that had Hawks coach Kyle Gustafson concerned going into the matchup.

Game 2 is 5 p.m. Sunday in Spokane.

Diego Buttazzoni scored two goals for Portland, which closed an early deficit to 5-3 at the end of the first period. But Spokane opened the second period with two goals, and added a third to make it 8-3.

Trailing 8-4 entering the third period, Portland couldn’t manage a shot for half the period while the Chiefs scored twice.

Spokane’s Berkly Catton, the Seattle Kraken prospect, scored 34 seconds into the first period and Spokane, which had the WHL’s second-most goals (292), were off and running. After the Chiefs’ fourth goal, by Van Olm at the 9:42 mark of the first period, Gustafson replaced Stebetak with Marek Schlenker.

Catton and Shea Van Olm had a goal and three assists each for Spokane. Assanali Sarkenov had two goals. Nine different Chiefs scored goals.

The Chiefs outshot Portland 40-29.

Medicine Hat beat Lethbridge 5-2 in the first game of the Eastern Conference finals.
