The PPB-PFR Fire Investigations Unit has arrested a man in relation to a four-alarm apartment complex fire that hospitalized two in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood on Friday morning.

A resident of the complex, Shaun Szwarz, 40, was arrested by the PPB-PFR unit Friday. He is accused of six counts of first-degree arson, six counts first-degree criminal mischief and six counts of reckless endangerment. Szwarz was booked at Multnomah County Detention Center on Friday evening. No date for his initial court appearance has been set.

The four-alarm fire took place on East Burnside Street near Northeast 104th Avenue at a three-story apartment complex. It was first reported around 6 a.m. on Friday, with over 80 members of PF&R and the Gresham Fire Department responding to the call.

The three-story complex was already engulfed by flames when fire crews arrived on the scene and “at least four” people had jumped out of windows to escape, according to a PF&R spokesperson.

Two unidentified victims of the fire have been hospitalized with “serious injuries” that include second- and third-degree burns, broken vertebrae, a broken ankle and inhalation injuries, according to PF&R’s Friday-evening press release.

Fire crews rescued a total of eight people, four dogs and one cat from the building.

Officials stated that a minimum of 15 people will be displaced due to the fire, adding that the number could climb to 31 based on an assessment of the building’s damages.

The PPB-PFR Fire Investigation Unit thanked the Oregon State Police Accelerant Detection K9 Team for “invaluable assistance” in the case.

The fire’s investigation is ongoing, PF&R urges that “any witnesses to the fire or other victims that have not spoken to Portland Fire & Rescue Investigators or PPB, please contact Det. Meredith Hopper.”
