A family enjoys a mellow paddle on the Tualatin River.

The Tualatin Riverkeepers hosts the 28th annual Tualatin River Discovery Day on Saturday, June 24.

It’s a great family-friendly way to get acquainted with one of Oregon’s safest and mellowest rivers for canoers and kayakers.

Canoes and kayaks can be rented for $35, but those with their boats can join in for free.

Participants launch from Metro’s Farmington Paddle Launch, 9665 S.W. River Road in Hillsboro, then paddle 3.7 miles downriver to the Eagle Landing site, 26001 S.W. Rainbow Lane, meandering through calm, shady waters.

The event continues at Groner Elementary School, 23405 S.W. Scholls Ferry Road in Hillsboro. The outdoor celebration will feature food, face-painting, henna tattoos, and nature-art activities for kids.

Reserve your launch time from 9 a.m. to noon and rent a kayak or canoe at http://tinyurl.com/TRKDiscoveryDay
