“Design is one of the core values of our brand,” explained Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s Head of Global Design. “I believe a car can be more than just a mass of metal. I want to turn it into a living thing.”
The KODO design philosophy stresses flowing lines and reflective surfaces, which Mazda enhanced with a new paint formulation called Soul Red Crystal. Beyond typical metallic automobile paints, the new color is designed to highlight the curved surfaces of the vehicle.
“Exploring new ways of reflection moving across the car is an artistic practice,” said Julien Montousse, Mazda’s Director of Design. “We are obsessed with the power of human hands and the artistic forms that can only be shaped by human hands.”

Mazda’s emphasis on design was also apparent with the new vehicle’s interior. Featuring a clean, uncluttered dashboard, the new vehicle reflects Mazda’s historic positioning as a driver’s car company.
Mazda offers the CX-5 with your choice of SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter gasoline engines, paired with either the six-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic or six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission. Also available is Mazda’s predictive i-ACTIV AWD system, which helps maintain control in all weather conditions with minimal drag on fuel economy. The new CX-5 also adopts Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control, the first of a coming suite of vehicle motion control technologies.
Mazda Motor Corporation announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show today that it will offer the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel engine in the all-new Mazda CX-5 for the second half of 2017. The CX-5 will be Mazda’s first diesel engine model in the North American market.
Pricing for the new 2017 Mazda CX-5 has not yet been announced, but the vehicle is expected in dealerships soon.
