OK, Beaverton Valley Times readers, we are beginning to work on our annual magazine, Portrait, and once again we are asking for your help. This year’s theme is “Turning Points,” and we’re hoping to have some fun with this one.

It will feature stories about moments in life when something occurs causing people to change course.

We’re looking for inside stories about folks from anywhere in the boundaries of the Beaverton School District, the Sherwood School District and the Tigard-Tualatin School District.

Naturally, we want you to share your stories with us. These could involve your tale of overcoming adversity, a major life change, desire to follow your heart or chase a dream, the catalyst that inspired you to start a new venture or follow a new career path or even take on a new role — whatever turning point in life you feel like sharing with our readers.

And, just to help you consider where to look for your stories, consider these subject areas: the path to U.S. citizenship and realizing the American dream, overcoming a medical illness, the loss of a loved one, the search for a new professional challenge, an employment change, the unique idea that launched an entrepreneur, the reason for standing up for a cause, a call to action or community service or an historic event. Think about what it was that prompted you to become an artist, a foster parent, a volunteer, an activist, a business owner, a public servant, a pastor, an organ donor, a medical researcher or an adventure-seeker crossing off items on your bucket list.

We like to keep these things short; those that go beyond 500 words are likely to be edited and may even run the risk of not getting in.

We’d also like photos to illustrate your story, if possible. They should be JPG files of 200 dpi or more and at least 5 by 7 inches.

Want to tell your story, but not the writer type? Just give us a call or email, and we’ll follow up with you.

Stories and photos should be emailed to Christina Lent at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or mailed to Turning Points, Times Newspapers, 6605 S.E. Lake Road, Portland 97222. For more information, call 503-546-0735.

The deadline for submissions is the end of the day Friday, March 1.
