Portland Community College’s Rock Creek campus is hosting the eighth annual Semana de la Raza “Week of the people” from Monday through Friday, April 25, at the Event Center, Building 9, 17705 N.W. Springville Road.

This event, which has a theme this year of “El color de la vida” or “the color of life,” is the college’s annual celebration of Latino culture with a weeklong schedule of workshops, speakers and entertainment. It is free and open to the public.

Semana de la Raza begins with its kick-off day from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, featuring live music from the Tom Bergeron Brasil Band from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Los Dos de Atarés from 2 to 3 p.m. as well as food from La Taqueria Hermanos Ochoa’s. From 3 to 4 p.m., organizers will show clips from the Mexican television series “El Chavo Del Ocho” and be followed by a brief discussion of the show’s cultural impact.

Tuesday is Chicanito Day from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for area high school students to participate in student-led workshops, campus tours and classroom visits. That night from 6 to 8, Rock Creek is hosting a talent show.

Other highlights include journalist Todd Miller’s talk from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday about his new book, “Border Patrol Nation,” which documents how border patrol and immigration enforcement has dramatically expanded inward in the country during the past several years. From 2 to 3:30 p.m. the Milagro Theater will present “Cuentame Coyote,” the story of two cousins abandoned in the desert while crossing the border with a “Coyote.”

On Thursday, April 24, the week closes with the Cesar Chavez Distinguished Service Awards and Reception from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The ceremony will feature the Cesar Chavez Distinguished Service Awards, Semana de la Raza poster competition, an essay contest and musical guest Edna Vazquez.

An Hermanas Conference returns to campus Friday, April 25. This all-day event is designed to attract young Latina women to careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Sponsored by Portland Community College and Intel Corporation’s Latino Employee Group.
