BEAVERTON WRESTLING AND BASKETBALL FILLED: Beaverton High School announced this week that it had hired Brian Sullivan as its new varsity head wrestling coach and Jeff Bennett as its new varsity head boys basketball coach. Sullivan, a social studies teacher at Sunset High School, has 20 years coaching experience, previously establishing strong wrestling programs at Madison and Sunset high schools. Bennett has been part of the Beaverton staff since 2007 and is working as an instructional assistant at BHS.


NIKE PRE-NATIONALS: Aloha High School will host the ninth annual Nike Pre-National Cross Country Meet at Portland Meadows on Saturday. The event is one of the premier cross country meets on the west coast and will feature more than 100 teams and 3,000 athletes. In total, there will be 16 different races including four divisions of boys and girls varsity races. The top race for the boys and girls is the Jim Danner Championship which will include 20 of the top teams and individual athletes in the region, West Coast and states beyond. The Nike Pre-National Meet will begin at 8:30 a.m. and there is an entrance fee of $5. For more information about the meet, please go to

METRO FOOTBALL: The Metro League continues regular season play on Friday when Sunset (0-1, 3-1) hosts Jesuit (0-0, 3-1) at 7:30 p.m., Aloha (1-0, 4-0) at Westview (0-0, 2-2) at 7:30 p.m., and Southridge (0-0, 1-3) at Beaverton (0-0, 4-0) at 7:30 p.m.

VALLEY CATHOLIC FOOTBALL: Valley Catholic (1-3) opens Lewis & Clark League play at 7 p.m. Friday night at Hillsboro Stadium with a game against Corbett (0-3).

STEELHEADERS TO MEET: The Tualatin Valley Chapter of the Northwest Steelheaders will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. at the American Legion Hall, 20325 SW Alexander, Aloha. This month's program will feature Joe Borga of Hogg's Jo/Mar Hardcore Tackle. He will talk about tuna fishing off Oregon's shore. BEAVER VOLLEYBALL BREAKS THROUGH: The Beaverton volleyball team broke through to beat Aloha in straight sets on Tuesday, giving the team its first Metro League victory since 2005. The Beavers, under new head coach Joe Boken, beat the Warriors 25-10, 25-22, 25-23 on Tuesday to move to 1-1 and a tie for third place in league play. “This was a true team victory. Each player on the team contributed passes, sets, blocks and kills,” Boken said. “These girls have heart. They believe in each other and ... they can play volleyball.” The Beavers’ last league win had come over Hillsboro on Oct. 27, 2005, and had been followed by 61 straight Metro losses before the team’s Tuesday victory.

THOMAS TYNER HONORED: Aloha High senior tailback Thomas Tyner has been selected to participate in the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Tyner was honored in a selection ceremony at Aloha High School on Tuesday. Thus far in 2012, Tyner — Oregon’s 2010 Offensive Player of the Year — has racked up 1,487 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns on 122 carries in four games. The All-American Bowl will be held at noon (CST) Jan. 5 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, and will also be televised live on NBC.
