To the editor:STOCK IMAGE - Pamplin Media Group

I came to your city as a guest to watch your 4th of July Parade. It was refreshing to see so many organizations taking part in such a wonderful tradition. The number of young people participating was also very nice to see.

However, what disturbed me the most was the total lack of respect given the parade's honor guard. Besides a color guard unit you also had a decorated U.S. Marine in a wheelchair. From my position on Holly Street, only half the people rose to their feet as the flag passed by. Almost all of those were over 40 years of age.

Almost none of the young people stood nor did their parents. Many didn't even become quiet for a few seconds to give the Marine a round of applause. In my opinion your community should be ashamed. You missed a great teaching opportunity for your youth.
