Noel Hygelund places fourth as the Cougars take seventh overall at the two-day tournament in North Bend.

Alejandro Sandoval and Keltin Boykin each came a win away from a title, taking second place, while Noel Hygelund settled for fourth after reaching the penultimate round.

The three seniors led the Cougars to seventh place out of 28 teams with 101 points at the two-day tournament, where Prineville-Crook County (299) captured the championship.

Sandoval (285) won three matches by fall and defeated Crook County’s Jason Williams by 3-2 decision to reach the title bout, where he was dealt a 6-4 overtime loss at the hands of Vancouver (Wash.) Evergreen’s Austin Wright. It was the first setback of the season for Sandoval (8-1).

Boykin (195) received a bye in the first round, pinned two opponents and earned a 6-3 decision over Central Point-Crater’s Micah Walker to advance to the finals. Crook County’s Gunnar Robirts pinned him with 19 seconds left in regulation of the championship match.

Hygelund (160) won two matches by fall and clipped Gresham’s Colby Winnett to reach the semifinals, where he fell 3-2 against Roseburg’s Ian Thomas.

Hygelund, who sat out Canby’s dual meet at home Dec. 11 against Troutdale-Reynolds due to flu-like symptoms, advanced to the third-place match in North Bend by injury default. He was pinned in 29 seconds by Eagle Point’s James McCoy.

Sandoval, Boykin and Hygelund combined for 70 of the Cougars’ 101 points at the Coast Classic. Gus Warren (106) added 10 points but did not place.
