PHOTO COURTESY OF CCSO - Mark CollinsA Prineville man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the theft of a dump trailer and excavator and jailed in Deschutes County.

This past Monday, officers from Prineville Police Department were dispatched to investigate the theft of a 17-foot black dump trailer from a business parking lot off of Southwest High Desert Drive in Prineville.

The theft was determined to have occurred Sunday afternoon, and on Monday afternoon, a citizen tip led Prineville officers and Crook County deputies to a Northwest Grimes Road address where the stolen trailer was found in the driveway.

Investigators found two other trailers on the property. One of the trailers is a dual axle high walled cargo trailer, and the other is a dual axle flatbed trailer. Neither trailer was believed to be stolen, but authorities said they appeared out of place. In addition, a brand new Caterpillar excavator was found on the property by investigators.

The reported stolen trailer was returned to the rightful owner at that time.

Later that day, 61-year-old Mark Collins of Prineville was taken into custody for theft of the recovered trailer. The excavator and the dump trailer were seized at that time under the belief that they were stolen property. CCSO made contact with Peterson CAT in Redmond the Tuesday, and confirmed that the excavator had been stolen from their lot around Aug. 1.

Collins was arrested by CCSO on Tuesday and transferred to Deschutes County Jail on charges related to the theft of the excavator from Peterson CAT. He was arraigned on Wednesday and released later that day with a court date.

A search warrant was executed by CCSO with assistance from Prineville Police Department on Thursday at Collins' residence northwest of Prineville where investigators collected evidence related to the case.

CCSO is also still trying to determine the owners of the two trailers seized from the Northwest Grimes Road address. The Crook County Sheriff's Office can be reached at 541-447-6398.
