Gresham resident Martha Mathew, 82, died Sunday, July 23, of heart failure at her home. A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, at Gresham Funeral Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave. A memorial service will be held at at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at Wood Village Baptist Church, 23601 W. Arata Road.

Martha was born Jan. 17, 1924, in Knoxville, Tenn., to Everett and Lelia Crabtree. She lived in Tennessee, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts and graduated from high school in New York.

She attended Wesleyan Bible College in Houghton, N.Y., and graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C., in 1946. She received her master's degree in education from Oregon State University in 1963. She moved to Gresham in 1961.

She married Paul Mathew on Aug. 22, 1947, in Pontiac, Mich. Her husband preceded her in death on May 31, 1992.

A globetrotter, Martha circled the world. Warm climates were her favorite. She enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles and Tetris. She also loved connecting with friends via e-mail.

Survivors include her sons, John E. Mathew of Anchorage, Alaska, and Glenn Mathew of Portland; daughters, Jan Stahl of Vancouver, Wash., Donna Portin of Gresham, and LuAnne Koehler of Ridgefield, Wash.; brothers, Wendell Crabtree of Auburn Hills, Mich., Glenn Crabtree of Palm Desert, Calif., and Lloyd Crabtree of Ann Arbor, Mich.; sister, Wilma Crabtree of Portland; 27 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Remembrances may be made to Wood Village Baptist Church. Gresham Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.
