Cross country: Several of the nation's best teams will run in the first Bill Dellinger Invitational today in Eugene. In the 13-team men's field are No. 5 Texas, No. 7 Portland, No. 11 BYU, No. 15 Oregon, No. 19 Alabama and No. 30 American. The women's field has 11 teams, including No. 5 BYU, No. 7 Duke, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 21 Washington, No. 28 Wake Forest, No. 29 Indiana and No. 30 Oregon. The 6,000-meter women's race starts at 5:20 p.m. at Alton Baker Park, with the 8,000-meter men's race at 6 p.m. The Portland men are battling some injuries; No. 1 runner John Moore has a sore Achilles tendon, and No. 2 David Kinsella is doubtful with a sore knee. … Former Grant High runner Alec Wall, a senior at Dartmouth, is captain of the No. 23 Big Green. He recently placed second overall in the Dartmouth Invitational.
Soccer: The University of Portland women (7-2-1, No. 4 by Soccer America) plays host to Washington at 7 tonight and Oregon at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Pilot men (3-2-2) are at home at 4:30 today against Seattle, then play at San Francisco on Sunday.
Volleyball: Portland State plays a key Big Sky Conference match Saturday at Sacramento State. Next week, the Vikings go to Montana and Montana State. The next match at Stott Center is Oct. 12 against Weber State.
Football: Linfield's homecoming game is 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Willamette. The Wildcats are 0-2 but ranked 20th in NCAA Division III; Willamette is 1-3. … The entertainment in McMinnville continues Monday, with free admission, as the Linfield alumni team meets the junior varsity in a 7 p.m. game. The alumni team is expected to include QB Tyler Matthews; receivers Casey Allen, Brandon Hazenberg, Sonte' Wong and George Carter; and running backs Mordechai Kotler and Carl Haberberger. … Patrick Stoudamire, a freshman defensive back from Centennial High, grabbed his first college interception in a recent game for Western Illinois (3-1), which is ranked 21st among NCAA Division I-AA teams. He also has four tackles in limited duty in two games. … Kentucky coach Rich Brooks, whose job always seems to be on the line, has the Wildcats at 2-2 going into two winnable games, both at home, Saturday against Central Michigan and Oct. 7 against South Carolina.
Softball: With seven starters and 13 players returning from an NCAA tournament team, Portland State begins its fall season with an alumni game at 10 a.m. Saturday at Erv Lind Stadium. The Vikings also will play at Erv Lind on Oct. 7 against Blue Mountain Community College, Oct. 8 against Western Oregon and Clackamas CC and Oct. 14 against Touch 'Em All, Southwestern Oregon CC and Southern Oregon. Right-hander Mandy Hill (24-7, 1.97 ERA) leads the PSU returnees; she also hit .322 with a school-record 12 home runs and a team-high 48 RBIs last season.
