District needs Wu's experience, passion
- Portland Tribune - Opinion
We urge voters in Oregon's 1st Congressional District to re-elect David Wu. In his eight years in Congress, the wonkish Wu has been an independent voice passionately tackling diverse issues: quality and affordable education, the nation's investment in science and technology, international trade policies and the war in Iraq.
Locally, he pushed for funding to help Tigard's HemCon Inc. develop a new battlefield bandage for the U.S. military. He also worked to obtain federal dollars to help the regional health-care information technology industry expand its reach to improve patient care.
Wu's Republican opponent, state Rep. Derrick Kitts of Hillsboro, is politically savvy but too strident for the moderate 1st Congressional District.
We expect Wu to continue to improve as a congressman by focusing on deliverable results for Oregon and his district.
