Donations will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue firefighters are on pace to accomplish their mission to collect $50,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Last Friday and Saturday, off-duty firefighters and their family members took shifts along Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway at Highway 217 in Beaverton and at the Bridgeport Village exit off of Interstate 5 in Tualatin for Tualatin Valley Firefighters Union Local 1660's annual 'Fill the Boot' campaign.

The volunteers collected $28,000 in cash donations as passing motorists dropped spare change and dollars into their firefighter boots.

Firefighters will hit the intersections again this Friday and Saturday, and say it's not too late for folks to support the effort.

In Beaverton, firefighters will be posted along the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway at the Highway 217 intersection from 7 to 10 a.m. on Friday.

In the afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, firefighters will be posted in Tualatin along Bridgeport Road at the I-5 intersection. They will be at the same location on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Individuals unable to visit a 'Fill the Boot' intersection can donate online at or drop off a check at any TVF and R office or fire station. Checks should be made out to MDA.

The money raised by firefighters is used by the MDA for research and treatments to prolong children's lives. It is spent on braces and wheelchairs, on community health centers, support groups and summer camps.

The International Association of Firefighters has been a strong supporter of MDA for over 50 years.
